Advancing responsible ASM cobalt in the DRC
Kumi was chosen to support Trafigura and its partner Chemaf, in the development of a formalised artisanal operation at the Mutoshi mining site in the DRC, working collaboratively with international NGO partner Pact. The engagement of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) by large-scale mining operators is encouraged in the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Mineral Supply Chains.
Kumi’s role as responsible supply chain consultant was to work alongside all actors involved at Mutoshi to promote responsible artisanal production. We provided advice on the implementation of effective management controls for health, safety, environment and community engagement, based on international standards and an ongoing assessment of risks at the site. We acted as independent assessors to the project, advising Trafigura’s management on project progress and recommending actions to address identified risks.
Further steps to support responsible ASM cobalt production
Trafigura has since retained Kumi to support its trading agreement with Entreprise Générale du Cobalt (EGC) which will transform the ASM cobalt sector in the DRC. Kumi brings its deep understanding of supply chain due diligence to assure that OECD responsible sourcing standards are upheld.
