Enhanced due diligence on an industrial copper mine in DRC

The Project

Our team visited a large-scale industrial copper mine in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to evaluate the site’s compliance with the 32 Copper Mark requirements and Trafigura’s responsible sourcing standards.

Following a specifically developed site visit protocol and leveraging initial desk-based research, Kumi:

  • Inspected the mining and processing facilities and surrounding communities to understand site-specific details.
  • Conducted interviews with key stakeholders, including local community members, union representatives, OHS, environmental management, and security staff.
  • Analysed the copper mine’s risk management system and procedures, including a review of its human rights impact assessment and the supplier screening process.
  • Carried out a walkthrough of the security system including the vetting process of security personnel.

The output of the assessment included:

  • A Copper Mark summary report for Trafigura’s downstream customers, aligned with the RMI Risk Readiness Assessment (RRA) criteria, detailing the current status and relevant recommendations.
  • A client-specific report for internal use by Trafigura and the mine site, featuring targeted recommendations and detailed observations on 83 predefined sub-topics, such as the security context, labour practices and environmental management.

The outcome

Kumi’s efforts have significantly enhanced the trust between the Trafigura and the copper mine and between Trafigura and its customers. Since the assessment, Trafigura has made substantial investments to strengthen its partnership with the mine site. At the site level, management received a clear plan and pathway to align its procedures with the Copper Mark requirements.
