On Wednesday 30 November 2016 the Responsible Mining Foundation will hold a consultation workshop in London on the draft methodology for the forthcoming Responsible Mining Index.
The Responsible Mining Index will be a public report that will rank the economic, environmental, social and governance performance of 30 of the world’s largest mining companies.
Funded by non-industry donors including the Dutch and Swiss governments, the Index will differ from existing indices and benchmarks in a number of ways:
- The performance of both stock exchange-listed and state-owned companies will be analysed in the Index.
- Mine site-level data and contextual information will be included in order to assess the comparative performance of companies 'on the ground' rather than just at a corporate level.
- There will be a focus on identifying and highlighting leading practice in order to encourage continuous improvement.
The first Index will be published in 2017 and biennially thereafter.
This consultation workshop is seeking input from industry stakeholders on the methodology that the Responsible Mining Foundation is currently developing, in particular the design and application of data metrics. The participation of representatives from mining companies and industry associations would be welcomed.
Andrew Britton from Kumi will be facilitating the workshop on behalf of the Responsible Mining Foundation.
